Top 5 Things To Do in Dubrovnik
1. Walk the Ancient City Walls
Dubrovnik’s most iconic experience is walking the 2-kilometre stretch of stone walls that surround the Old Town. From the top, you’ll get panoramic views of terracotta rooftops, the Adriatic Sea, and hidden courtyards below. Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds—and bring your camera, because every corner is a postcard. Children also really love it because its really fun to explore and there is an ice cream cafe high above the city! Children under 7 are free.
2. Explore the Old Town
Inside the walls lies a maze of marble streets, historic churches, and lively squares. It is just stunning and so full of history. Stroll down the Stradun, Dubrovnik’s main street, lined with cafés and shops. Don’t miss landmarks like Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace, and the Franciscan Monastery with its centuries-old pharmacy. The Old Town is also a great place to simply wander—every alley has its own story. It’s also a great place for Games of Thrones fans as parts of the city were used in filming.
3. Take the Cable Car to Mount Syd
For the best view of Dubrovnik, hop on the cable car up to Mount Srđ. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping vistas of the Old Town, the Adriatic islands, and the mountains beyond. Stay for sunset if you can—it’s one of the most breathtaking sights in Croatia. There’s also a war museum at the top that offers insight into the city’s recent history and an amazing restaurant with panoramic views - but book early!
4. Take a boat trip to Lokrum Island
While we were there we took a 15-minute small ferry ride from the Old Town, Lokrum Island feels like an oasis away from the crowds. You’ll find pine forests, rocky beaches, a botanical garden, crystal-clear waters, a saltwater “Dead Sea,” and ruins of a Benedictine monastery. It’s the perfect half-day escape. There are play areas for children and my boys loved finding the animals especially the peacocks and tortoises that roam the island.
5. Enjoy the Food and Nightlife
Croatian cuisine shines in Dubrovnik. Try fresh seafood, black risotto, and local wines at one of the charming konobas (taverns) in the Old Town. For a memorable experience, grab a table at a cliffside bar like Buža, where you can sip cocktails while watching the sunset over the sea. In the evenings, the city buzzes with music, wine bars, and open-air terraces. Our family loved exploring the coastal promenade with its gorgouse little coves, perfect for stone skimming and the stunning resturants. There is even a fabulous cave bar!
